The Grower’s Chronicles: The Science of Cannabis Breeding and Genetic Diversity

This article is part of Benzinga Cannabis’ ‘Chronicles of the Grower’ series, which focuses on trends, developments and key players in the cannabis cultivation industry. Stay tuned as we delve into the world of cannabis growers and their contribution to this rapidly expanding market.

The cannabis market is transforming, with consumers increasingly favoring genetic diversity and overall product quality. Danny Murr-Sloatfounder of AlpineStash Genetics & Consultinghas observed this trend, noting a growing interest in rare and unique strains over the traditional high THC content.

“I’m starting to see a desire for genetic diversity in the market,” noted Murr-Sloat. “Consumers are now looking for rare and unique genetics, retro strains from the 90s and 00s and heirloom cultivars. This change is refreshing as it focuses more on the overall experience rather than just the power.

Maximizing yields through appropriate genetic selection

Murr-Sloat breeding methods emphasize selecting the right genetics for specific growing conditions. This approach, known as “right plant, right place,” ensures that selected strains thrive in the given environment. It optimizes yield and reduces production costs.

“The impact that genetic selection has on a facility’s KPIs cannot be overstated,” explained Murr-Sloat. “Finding the genetics that grow best at the individual facility, given unique infrastructure, staffing, pest and disease pressure, and business needs, is critical.”

Additionally, Murr-Sloat focuses on canopy management to maximize the use of vertical and horizontal growing spaces. This includes proper plant training, pruning, spacing and proper density to achieve an even and uniform canopy, which is essential for high yields and quality.

Ensuring compliance in cultivation

Regulatory compliance is a critical aspect of modern cannabis cultivation. Murr-Sloat breaks this down into administrative and testing categories, emphasizing the need for a thorough understanding of and compliance with the regulations. It advocates meticulous documentation and record keeping to ensure compliance and avoid punitive actions.

“My approach has always been to overwhelm regulators with compliance and documentation,” Murr-Sloat said. “Employing a dedicated compliance officer ensures proper accountability and efficiency in operations.”

Sustainable practices in focus

Sustainability remains a critical concern in cannabis cultivation. Murr-Sloat implements energy-efficient lighting and optimizes light cycles to reduce energy consumption. It also focuses on nutrient and irrigation programs that minimize waste, contributing to more environmentally friendly practices.

“Switching all pre-flower lighting cycles to a 16/8 can save up to eight hours of energy use,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in cultivation practices.
